Golf Course Grass
In South Africa, four types of grasses are typically used in inland golf courses - kikuyu, bentgrass, All Seasons Evergreen® and cynodon spp. Kikuyu is most commonly used on the fairways, while cynodon and bentgrass are perfect for the putting greens. Coastal golf courses have a different set of criteria. All Seasons Evergreen® looks neat and has a good colour, but it does require more water and is vulnerable to kikuyu infestations.
Bentgrass for golf courses
Bentgrass is very costly as it is best suited to cool seasons so needs a stringent water routine to survive in the South African heat. Bentgrass is kept at a short blade length to ensure all play “is up to scratch.” However, this comes at a price, as all grasses that are kept at a short blade length have to be watered, fed and doctored regularly to prevent the grass from dying.
Cynodon grass for golf courses
Cynodon grass results in a different roll but is more affordable, uses less water and needs to be mowed and sprayed less than bentgrass. It, therefore, makes for a more affordable and environmental option, but it does not recover as fast as kikuyu.
All Seasons Evergreen® looks neat and has a good colour, but it does require more water and is vulnerable to kikuyu infestations.
