The landscaping industry is full of young talent eager to grow and make a difference. This Youth Month 2025, we are proud to introduce Kian Drotskie, a dedicated 23-year-old Site Manager at Life Landscapes, Cape Town branch. Kian’s journey in landscaping careers is a testament to passion, perseverance, and hands-on experience shaping his path in the green industry.
A Natural Start in Landscaping
Kian began his landscaping journey in 2021 as a roaming supervisor and driver, overseeing installations and maintenance at over 30 sites — a number that doubled as he expanded his responsibilities. Though he didn’t study landscaping formally, his passion for nature and hunger to learn pushed him to develop his skills in the field.
“When the opportunity arose to try my hand at landscaping, I took it,” he says. “I learned all I could to better myself and my skillset.”
In just seven months at Life Landscapes, Kian now manages the Aan de Wijnlanden residential estate, where he leads his team with commitment and resilience.
Solving Problems, Finding Calm
Kian thrives in an environment where no two days are the same.
“Every challenge is different in its own way. Finding a way to work around or with it excites me,” he explains. “Problems calm me — maybe not in the moment, but definitely afterwards when looking back at it.”
This attitude makes him a reliable and proactive leader on site.
Lessons from the Field
One of Kian’s key learnings on his journey so far?
“Every person has something that makes them uniquely good at something. When that something arises, it should be encouraged and nurtured.”
